A Female Gaur, Her Baby Spotted at Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary
AKP Phnom Penh, January 10, 2025 --
A female gaur and her baby were spotted in the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary in Preah Vihear province, pointed out a news release issued by the Ministry of Environment on Jan. 8, adding that the gaurs were seen joining herds of domestic cows feeding themselves.
Spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment H.E. Khvay Atiya credited good cooperation among all players as well as the community in biodiversity conservation, resulting in appearances of rare wild animals such as gaur.
Gaur is the largest cattle species in the world and one of the largest living land mammals, and they are often found in forested areas across South and Southeast Asia.
The global population of gaur decreased by 90 percent, and it was listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Vulnerable.
Gaur is threatened across its range by habitat loss and hunting for horns, meat, and trophies, and disease spread from domestic cattle.
In Cambodia, gaur remains mostly found in the eastern plains, but there is no record of the number of the animal in the country.
