Over 1,000 Hectares of Rice Fields Rescued with Emergency Water Supply in Siem Reap
AKP Siem Reap, February 04, 2025 —
Authorities in Siem Reap province have launched an emergency water release operation to irrigate over 1,000 hectares of dry-season rice fields, following an urgent request from local farmers facing severe water shortages.
The operation, which began on the afternoon of Feb. 3, involves channeling water from the Siem Reap River to affected fields in Chreav and Siem Reap communes.
Provincial Governor H.E. Prak Sophoan instructed relevant authorities to work closely with the company managing the river’s infrastructure to ensure a steady water supply to the drought-stricken areas.
Farmers had raised concerns over the prolonged dry conditions, which they attributed to lower river water levels.
The crisis threatened significant crop losses, but the intervention by local authorities has now allowed water to reach the fields gradually.
“This effort reflects the government’s strong commitment to supporting the agricultural sector,” farmers said, expressing their gratitude to the provincial administration and relevant agencies for their swift response.
According to official reports, a total of 1,354 hectares of dry-season rice fields rely on the Siem Reap River for irrigation—1,010 hectares in Siem Reap commune (east of Phnom Krom) and 344 hectares in Sangkat Chreav.
The ongoing river improvement project had initially contributed to the shortage, but authorities have since prioritised irrigation to protect farmers’ livelihoods.
Local officials continue to monitor the situation, ensuring a stable water supply to sustain rice cultivation through the dry season.
