Cambodia Confirms Participation in 33rd SEA Games Despite Border Tensions
AKP Phnom Penh, June 24, 2025 --
The Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) has reaffirmed Cambodia’s participation in the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Bangkok, Thailand, noting that the host extended a warm welcome for the participation of all ASEAN member countries.
H.E. Vath Chamroeun, who is also a Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports, reiterated NOCC’s stance on June 22 in response to media inquiries related to ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
Sports should remain free from political interference, and in the latest Southeast Asian Sports Council meeting, the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) announced that Cambodia as well as other countries in the region are warmly welcome for the 33rd SEA Games to be held from Dec. 9 to 20, 2025, he said.
He added that the NOCT also appreciated the success of Cambodia in hosting the 32nd SEA Games in 2023, underscoring the spirit of regional cooperation and mutual respect.
H.E. Vath Chamroeun recalled that the rule under the Olympic Charter does not permit any kind of political, religious, or racial discrimination and propaganda, adding that the competition is all about the athletic prowess of the participants.
The Secretary General also encouraged everyone to embrace sports as a platform for fostering friendship, solidarity, and peace among countries and peoples.
