In a landmark move for cultural preservation, Angkor Artisans Co., Ltd., a cornerstone of Khmer handicraft conservation, officially broke ground on the "Angkor Artisans Resort" in Siem Reap on Feb. 23. 

The US$5 million project marks a strategic shift from traditional craft preservation towards an immersive cultural destination, blending ancient heritage with modern technology.

The development, situated on a 10,000-square-metre site, will feature the new Angkor Artisans Theatre as its centerpiece. The facility is designed to evolve into a comprehensive cultural hub, creating a dynamic intersection between Cambodia's ancestral legacy and the digital age. 

The initiative aims to cater to a new generation of tourists seeking deeper, more meaningful engagement with Khmer culture.

Currently, Angkor Artisans operates as a living workshop where visitors can observe the intricate processes of traditional crafts, including wood and stone carving, silver smithing, lacquerware, and silk weaving. The new resort complex will elevate this experience by integrating theatrical performances and state-of-the-art digital presentations.

“The creation of this theatre is a synthesis of the world of artisan heritage and the world of spectacular heritage performance,” said Mr. Kay Lot, Chairman and CEO of Angkor Artisans. “We believe this is a significant step in defining the future of cultural tourism—one that not only entertains but also profoundly reinforces our national identity.”

The project is expected to be a major economic driver for the region. Mr. Ngov Sengkak, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap province, attended the ceremony and praised the initiative for its commitment to prioritising local employment and skills training.

“This groundbreaking is not merely the start of a construction project; it is the opening of a new chapter for tourism and culture in Siem Reap,” Mr. Ngov Sengkak stated. He emphasised that the resort, with its immersive light and sound shows and interactive experiences, will make Khmer culture more vibrant and accessible, particularly for younger generations, while ensuring local communities directly benefit from tourism revenue.

The Angkor Artisans Resort is scheduled to be developed as a premier destination that positions Siem Reap at the forefront of innovative cultural heritage tourism.
