Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, received here on Mar. 10 Hon. György Such, Director-General of the Hungarian National Assembly.

In the meeting, Samdech Khuon Sudary warmly welcomed the Hungarian delegation and highly valued the long-standing friendship between Cambodia and Hungary, noting that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

She expressed hope that bilateral ties would deepen toward a strategic partnership for the benefit of both nations and their peoples.

The National Assembly President also conveyed her sincere appreciation to the Hungarian National Assembly for the warm hospitality and fruitful outcomes of the Cambodian parliamentary delegation’s visit to Hungary late last year.

Highlighting the importance of peace and international cooperation, Samdech emphasised the crucial role of women in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. 

She stressed the need for the international community to work together to prevent and end wars and conflicts, underscoring that humanity must prevail.

Samdech remarked that “Humans must end war; otherwise, war will end humanity.” She also acknowledged Hungary’s constructive role in promoting peace and stability and noted its bridging role between the East and the West.

For his part, Hon. György Such expressed his pleasure at meeting Samdech Khuon Sudary and thanked the National Assembly of Cambodia for the warm welcome extended to the Hungarian delegation. 

He noted that Cambodia-Hungary relations have continued to develop positively through high-level dialogue, consultations, and expanding cooperation across various sectors.

Hon. György Such also highlighted that the establishment of the Parliamentary Friendship Groups in 2022 marked an important milestone in strengthening parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. 

He further noted that both sides are preparing to welcome His Majesty the King of Cambodia to Hungary in the near future, which will further deepen bilateral relations.

He emphasised the importance of continued exchanges and consultations between the two parliaments, including closer cooperation between their General Secretariats to implement the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). 

He also noted that both sides would continue to support each other at multilateral parliamentary forums, including the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Istanbul later this year.

Additionally, Hon. György Such highlighted the significance of the scholarship programme launched in 2014, which has enabled Cambodian students to pursue higher education in Hungary and strengthened educational cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Samdech also briefed the Hungarian delegation on the impact of recent Thai aggression on Cambodia, noting that some Cambodian citizens remain displaced due to the destruction of homes and property, the presence of unexploded ordnance, and illegal blockages preventing their safe return. 

She reiterated that the Cambodian Government continues to pursue a “quiet but not silent” approach, emphasising dialogue and peaceful solutions.

Samdech highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, science and technology, human resource development, and cultural exchange. She also underscored the importance of strengthening Mekong-Danube cooperation, particularly in sustainable water resource management.

The National Assembly President concluded by emphasising that people-to-people ties remain at the heart of Cambodia-Hungary relations, reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to a people-centred approach in advancing bilateral cooperation and continued mutual support at regional and international multilateral platforms.
