Cambodia, UN Partner to Boost Media Literacy and Combat Fake News
AKP Phnom Penh, March 24, 2026 --
Cambodia’s Ministry of Information and the United Nations have pledged to strengthen cooperation on media and information literacy to ensure the public receives accurate and secure information in the digital age.
Information Minister H.E. Neth Pheaktra met with UN Resident Coordinator to Cambodia H.E. Ms. Vladanka Andreeva on Monday afternoon to discuss strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing information security for Cambodian citizens.
During the meeting, H.E. Neth Pheaktra highlighted the Ministry’s restructured role in the Royal Government’s seventh mandate as a public affairs institution leading the work of managing information security based on three pillars: the right to information, information quality, and information safety.
"In an era dominated by modern media and social networks, ensuring that citizens receive 'real, verified, and safe' information is a top priority," the Minister stated.
H.E. Neth Pheaktra also briefed the UN representative on the progress of the national "Say No to Fake News" campaign, which has been implemented across all 25 municipality and provinces. He emphasised that the initiative is designed to build public resilience against the negative impacts of disinformation, including AI-generated deepfakes and digital distortions.
In response, Ms. Andreeva expressed strong support for the campaign, commending the Ministry’s proactive role in preventing "information pollution" that threatens social order and the well-being of the youth.
The Ministry of Information is also prioritising the reinforcement of professional ethics and journalism standards. H.E. Neth Pheaktra noted that establishing clear legal frameworks and ethical guidelines is essential for maintaining the integrity of the press and ensuring it serves the public interest with high responsibility.
The Minister expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from UN agencies, including UNESCO and the OHCHR. Both sides committed to transforming technological challenges into opportunities to build a resilient, well-informed Cambodian society focused on inclusive development.
