Electric Vehicle Registrations Surge to Over 14,000 Units
AKP Phnom Penh, March 27, 2026 --
The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Cambodia is accelerating rapidly, with a total of 14,534 EVs registered as of February 2026.
According to a report from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the figure includes 10,363 electric cars, 3,449 electric motorcycles, and 722 electric three-wheelers.
Notably, monthly registrations have surged in early 2026, doubling from 488 units in January to 1,078 units in February alone, the report stated.
EV adoption in Cambodia continues to grow each year in line with global trends, said H.E. Phan Rim, Spokesman of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, on Mar. 27.
“Promoting the use of EVs will contribute to reducing fuel consumption. Given Cambodia’s reliance on fuel imports, this will help strengthen the Kingdom’s energy security,” he said.
The three most popular EV brands in Cambodia are China’s BYD, Japan’s Toyota, and the United States’ Tesla.
Increasing EV usage not only supports household savings but also contributes to reducing the global health impacts of air pollution, he added.
To support this transition, the Royal Government has launched the National Policy on the Development of Electric Vehicles 2024-2030, aimed at promoting investment, expanding charging infrastructure, and ensuring Cambodia’s economic development keeps pace with global trends.
