China-Backed Project Clears 19,000 Hectares of Landmines
AKP Phnom Penh, April 01, 2026 --
Cambodia has cleared approximately 19,000 hectares of land contaminated by landmines and unexploded ordnance under a long-running Chinese assistance project, the state demining agency said on Wednesday.
The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) said the operations, conducted between 2018 and Feb. 28, 2026, resulted in the destruction of approximately 105,000 explosive remnants of war.
The initiative is part of a Beijing-funded grant aimed at addressing the lethal legacy of decades of internal conflict.
CMAC Director-General H.E. Heng Ratana announced the figures following a meeting with Chinese Ambassador H.E. Wang Wenbin in Phnom Penh. H.E. Ratana credited Chinese technical equipment with increasing the efficiency and safety of demining teams in the field.
"The project has delivered notable achievements," H.E. Ratana said, adding that the effort has reached approximately 4.6 million people through risk education and directly benefited more than 378,000 families.
Ambassador Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to providing further grant assistance and technical support to help Cambodia meet its clearance targets. He praised Phnom Penh's progress in advancing mine action policies, which he said contributed to socio-economic development and public safety.
