Cambodia Rejects False Reports of Border Closure, Reaffirms Open Entry for Foreign Visitors
AKP Phnom Penh, May 26, 2026 --
Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration (GDI) has strongly denied false reports circulating on Chinese social media claiming that Cambodia had temporarily closed its borders and imposed entry restrictions on foreigners under the age of 40.
In a clarification statement issued on May 26, the GDI said a Chinese-language post shared on WeChat on May 25 falsely alleged that Phnom Penh International Airport had suspended all arrivals and that land border checkpoints would tighten restrictions beginning May 26, 2026.
The post also claimed that all individuals under the age of 40, regardless of gender, would be denied entry into Cambodia even if they possessed valid visas or business documents.
“The General Department of Immigration completely rejects the false information,” the statement said, adding that immigration police had never received any directive from authorities to ban or restrict the entry of people under the age of 40.
The GDI clarified that Cambodia continues to implement normal immigration procedures in line with the Royal Government’s policies, focusing only on strengthening security measures and preventing illegal entry by foreigners.
The department stressed that foreign tourists, investors, businesspeople, traders, and migrant workers remain welcome in Cambodia and that there is no closure of entry or exit routes as claimed online.
According to the statement, all major international border checkpoints, including airports and land crossings, continue to operate normally without any changes affecting travel into or out of the Kingdom.
The GDI also highlighted the Royal Government’s ongoing efforts to boost tourism, including a trial visa exemption programme for Chinese nationals travelling from China. Under the initiative, Chinese visitors will be allowed to stay in Cambodia for up to 14 days during a four-month period from June 15 to Oct. 15, 2026.
