ASEAN Observer Team Visits An Ses Border Area to Assess Situation
AKP Phnom Penh, June 02, 2026 -- The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence has announced that the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), under the Philippine Chairmanship, conducted a field mission to the An Ses Border Checkpoint area in Preah Vihear province to observe and assess the border situation.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry’s Spokeswoman on Tuesday, the mission was facilitated by the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) and took place at 8:04 a.m. in An Ses Border Checkpoint, Choam Ksan district.
The observer team, led by the AOT’s Head of Mission, visited the area to observe, verify and report on conditions along the border. The Ministry stated that the area had been affected by incursions, the installation of barbed wire, and the deployment of shipping containers by the Thai military, which it said continue to prevent a number of Cambodian families from returning to their homes.
According to the press release, the visit highlighted the importance of expediting land demarcation work through the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), in accordance with the framework set out in Point 3 of the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) dated Dec. 27, 2025.
The Ministry said the objective is to enable affected residents to return safely, peacefully and with dignity to their homes without obstruction.
During the mission, the AOT also reviewed compliance with and implementation of measures contained in the Joint Statement following the ceasefire between the two neighbouring countries.
The Royal Government of Cambodia and the Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed their commitment to fully implement the Joint Statement of the Third Special GBC Meeting, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand signed on Oct. 26, 2025, and other relevant agreements.
The Ministry stressed that the commitment aims to support recovery efforts, restore normalcy, and ensure lasting peace and stability along the border.
