A research and conservation team discovered nests of Sarus Crane, a rare bird species threatened with extinction, at the beginning of this year's breeding season in the Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary.

NatureLife Cambodia announced on July 27 delightful preliminary results after their team discovered three Sarus Crane nests in the Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary at the start of this year's breeding season.

According to the source, from June to July, during the early rainy season, the research team including NatureLife Cambodia field staff, park rangers, and local community members demonstrated remarkable commitment by continuing nest surveys despite challenging field conditions.

Trekking through heavy rain, crossing streams, carrying motorbikes across difficult terrain, and navigating muddy roads, the team worked tirelessly to locate Sarus Crane nests and monitor all previously recorded nesting habitats.

“By July, our research team had already discovered three Sarus Crane nests in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary. As the breeding season continues until October, we hope that additional nests will be found. With financial support from the Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary REDD+ Project, nest searching, monitoring, and habitat protection for Sarus Cranes have been prioritised within the sanctuary,” NatureLife Cambodia said.

As a result, over the past three years, the organisation has recorded an increasing number of Sarus Crane nests. This positive trend reflects the effectiveness of the REDD+ project in strengthening joint conservation efforts among conservation NGOs, focal government officers, and local communities.
