Cambodia has etched its name in the annals of para-sports history, successfully hosting the groundbreaking 1st Asian Para Throwball Championship and sweeping the gold medals in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

The event, held at the Techo Sen National Centre for Persons with Disabilities in Phnom Penh, drew praise from international sports leaders for its exceptional organisation and the remarkable performance of the Cambodian athletes.

The championship, which concluded on Mar. 29, saw 122 athletes from six nations.

H.E. Yi Veasna, Secretary-General of the National Paralympic Committee of Cambodia, relayed that Nimala Rawit, President of the World Para Throwball Federation, lauded Cambodia’s meticulous planning and execution, setting a new standard for future Asian para-sport events.

"The organisation was excellent, and Cambodia’s hosting will serve as an example for other nations," stated H.E. Yi Veasna. He highlighted the dedication of the Cambodian teams, who, despite only two months of training, showcased exceptional skill and determination.

Cambodia’s teams demonstrated their prowess throughout the two-day competition, achieving decisive victories, including matches with scores as wide as 25-5.

The final results were: Men’s Category: Gold: Cambodia; Silver: Sri Lanka; Bronze: India while Women’s Category: Gold: Cambodia; Silver: Thailand; Bronze: India.

The seamless execution of the championship has positioned Cambodia as a model host for international para-sport competitions. International officials and athletes alike commended the country's commitment to inclusivity and excellence.

"This success reflects Cambodia’s commitment to promoting inclusive sports and empowering athletes with disabilities," H.E. Yi Veasna emphasised.

During the closing ceremony, Cambodia officially handed over the host nation flag to Malaysia, the host of the 2nd Asian Para Throwball Championship in 2026. H.E. Yi Veasna confirmed that Cambodia is already preparing to defend its titles in Malaysia, fueled by the momentum of their historic victory.

The successful hosting of the 1st Asian Para Throwball Championship not only celebrates the achievements of para-athletes but also reinforces Cambodia’s growing prominence in the international sports arena.
