His Majesty the King Reaffirms Cambodia’s Commitment to Mine Clearance on National Mine Awareness Day
AKP Phnom Penh February 23, 2026 --
His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, has reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to mine action and support for mine victims, marking the 27th anniversary of the National Mine Awareness Day observed on Feb. 24.
In a royal message issued on the occasion under the theme “Together for Displaced Persons and Safe Communities,” His Majesty the King emphasised the importance of raising public awareness about the dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO).
The monarch noted that Cambodia’s long decades of conflict have left vast areas contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war, causing severe human suffering, damaging infrastructure, hindering national development, and leaving tens of thousands of Cambodians injured, disabled, or killed.
He also highlighted that recent Thailand’s military incursions have resulted in additional contamination by bombs, shells, and unexploded munitions in civilian areas, further increasing the burden on the Royal Government of Cambodia to conduct clearance operations.
His Majesty the King praised the Royal Government’s ongoing efforts to destroy stockpiled mines and expand nationwide mine-clearance operations with the support of national and international partners, helping to return safe farmland to farmers and communities across the country.
He expressed his deep appreciation to the government, relevant ministries, institutions, and authorities at all levels – particularly mine action centres – for their dedication to mine clearance, risk education, and assistance to mine victims, enabling them to live with dignity within society.
The monarch called on friendly governments, national and international organisations, and charitable individuals to continue supporting Cambodia’s mine clearance efforts, UXO removal, and victim assistance programmes.
