Cambodia Denies Thai Media Claims of Cross-Border Grenade Fire
AKP Phnom Penh, February 24, 2026 —
Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence has categorically denied reports by several Thai media outlets alleging that Cambodian forces fired a 40mm grenade toward a Thai patrol position in Preah Vihear province.
According to the reports, which circulated on official Thai military pages and media platforms, the alleged incident occurred at around 8:50 a.m. on Feb. 24 near the Koul Prambei–Chak Chreng area. Cambodian authorities rejected the claim as false.
In a statement issued the same day, H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence of the Kingdom of Cambodia, called on the Thai side to cease the dissemination of misinformation that could lead to misunderstandings and increased tensions along the border.
The Ministry cited information from the 4th Military Region of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, stating that following reports of explosions and gunfire originating from the Thai side, liaison teams from Cambodia’s 4th Military Region and Thailand’s 2nd Army Area promptly established communication to clarify the situation. During these exchanges, Cambodian officials clearly affirmed that no Cambodian forces had fired any weapons as alleged.
The Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed Cambodia’s firm commitment to fully and responsibly respecting and implementing the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) of Dec. 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand of Oct. 26, 2025, and other related agreements. It also emphasised the importance of countering fake news to help restore normalcy, peace, stability, and long-term security along the border.
The Ministry further urged the public and media organisations to refrain from sharing unverified or false information and to rely only on clear, accurate, and credible sources, particularly official statements issued by the Royal Government of Cambodia and relevant institutions.
